CTRL + H puts you into superscript mode. CTRL + L puts you into subscript mode. CTRL + J assigns both a superscript and a subscript.
Keyboard shortcuts: Apply superscript or subscript For superscript, press Ctrl, Shift, and the Plus sign (+) at the same time. For subscript, press Ctrl and the Equal sign (=) at the same time. (Do not press Shift.)
For superscript, simply press Ctrl + Shift + + (press and hold Ctrl and Shift, then press +). For subscript, press CTRL + = (press and hold Ctrl, then press =). Pressing the respective shortcut again will get you back to normal text.
On the Insert tab, in the Symbols group, click the arrow under Equation, and then click Insert New Equation. Under Equation Tools, on the Design tab, in the Symbols group, click the More arrow.

If you want to display an exponent without calculating the result, enter the exponent into a cell and then double-click on the cell to select it. Highlight the character you want to format as superscript, then launch the Font Settings dialog from the Font group on the Excel Home tab.
