Answer:Click somewhere on the table of contents. Then select the References tab in the toolbar at the top of the screen. Then click on the Table of Contents buttons in the Table of Contents groups. Select Remove Table of Contents from the popup menu.
Click on the References tab and from the Table of Contents groups, click Table of Contents. Select Remove Table of Contents from the drop-down menu by clicking on it.
Removing the table of contents is simple. All you need to do is select it and then click the arrow on the menu that appears. At the bottom of the drop-down menu, select Remove Table of Contents. Your table of contents will now be removed from your document.
Go to References > Table of Contents > Insert Table of Contents. Select Modify. ... In the Styles list, click the level that you want to change and then click Modify. In the Modify Style pane make your changes. Select OK to save changes.
Highlight the entire Table of Contents. Press Ctrl + Shift + F9 (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + F9 (Mac) to unlink the field code.
Find the picture in the body of the document. Replace the Heading or Caption style with a standard paragraph style (alternatively, select Clear Formatting from the styles list). Regenerate the TOC/list of figures/list of tables and the picture should be gone forever!
Tip: You can delete the contents of a table row or column without deleting the table structure. To do this, select the row or column and then press the Delete key. Right-click in a table cell, row, or column you want to delete. To delete one cell, choose Shift cells left or Shift cells up.

In Word 2010, select your TOC header and go to the References tab in the top bar, from there select Add Text and select Do Now Show in Table of Contents. Repeat this for any other headings that you wish to remove (I also used this to exclude List of Figures and List of Tables from my TOC.
