A voided check is most often used to provide banking information, so that somebody can set up an electronic link with your bank account. They ask for a voided check because checks several details about your bank printed on them: Where you bank (or which credit union you use) Your bank account number.
Employers ask for a voided check when setting up your direct deposit because it provides all the information necessary to deposit money in your checking account. All U.S. banks have routing numbers and all deposit accounts have account numbers attached to them.
The voided check isn't necessary, it just happens to have both numbers printed on it. So long as they copy that information properly, they'll be able to make the deposit. Still, many companies require that you provide a voided check.
You can get a voided check by going to your bank and asking a teller to print one. There may be a fee for this service. Ask your bank if they have instructions on how to set up direct deposit. The information you need might be there.
