Vinyl Record Formats. Records come in a range of different flavors based on competition and consumer tastes. The most common sizes are seven, 10, and 12 inches in diameter, but size isn't the only way to identify what kind of vinyl record you have.
Phonograph records are generally described by their diameter in inches (12-inch, 10-inch, 7-inch), the rotational speed in revolutions per minute (rpm) at which they are played (8 13, 16 23, 33 13, 45, 78), and their time capacity, determined by their diameter and speed (LP [long playing], 12-inch disc, 33 13 ...
Vinyl records are produced to be played at one of three speeds: 33 1/3 RPM, 45 RPM, and 78 RPM. You will almost never deal with 78 RPM records, so don't worry about that. Most full-size 12-inch records will be 33 1/3 RPM, though some mainly EPs and maxi-singles will be at 45 RPM.
All record players don't use the same size vinyl. Basically, there are three different-sized vinyl records you will find on the market. These vinyl records rotate on the turntable at different speeds which are measured in revolutions per minute (RPM). ... It is most commonly older records that play at 78 RPM.
33 RPM records are the largest, usually measuring 12 inches in diameter. 78 RPM records are usually 10 inches in diameter.
The LP format remains in use for occasional new releases, though other formats have largely supplanted it. The size of the typical cardboard LP sleeve cover is 12.375 in (31.43 cm) square. Starting in the mid-1990s, the Compact Disc (CD) was the most common form of physically-distributed music products.
Made of 250,000 square foot of printed 'vinyl', the monolithic tarp is, somewhat dubiously, being called the world's largest vinyl record. While the printed polymer is indeed made of vinyl and will spin at 17 miles an hour (roughly 70BPM thanks Rolling Stone), the record is, sadly but not surprisingly, unplayable.
The Difference in Vinyl Record Speeds (33,45, and 78 records) 33, 45, 78. ... Vinyl records typically come in three speeds: 33, 45 and 78 rotations per minute (RPM). If you're like most record lovers you've probably flipped speeds from time to time in order to hear your music faster or slower than normal.
A 12-inch record plays at 33 RPM. This typically stores up to 22 minutes of music on each side. Nearly every album you see in a store will be a 12-inch record. The third and rarer size of record is the 10-inch disc.
The most common form of the vinyl single is the “45” or “7-inch”. The names are derived from its play speed, 45 rpm, and the standard diameter, 7 inches. The 7-inch 45 rpm record was released 31 March 1949 by RCA Victor as a smaller, more durable and higher-fidelity replacement for the 78 rpm shellac discs.
