The receipt also helps prove you had the card, or information from the card, to enter into the merchant terminal. It is advised to keep signed credit card receipts for at least 18 months for chargeback rebuttal. As for tax purposes, it is recommended that merchants keep signed receipts for at least 3 years.
Restaurants are quick to provide such receipts and since they're computerized, you can always phone the restaurant several days later and, with the date and exact time from the totaled receipt, you should be able to secure a copy of the itemized one. Hotels are different.
I don't know of any federal law or regulation that requires them to do so. Most restaurants will create a receipt to: Ensure that their customer has a correct accounting of what they were charged and what they paid. To ensure that their servers aren't simply pocketing the customer's cash payments.
Restaurants are quick to provide such receipts and since they're computerized, you can always phone the restaurant several days later and, with the date and exact time from the totaled receipt, you should be able to secure a copy of the itemized one. Hotels are different.
Itemized receipts are required for the actual substantiation of business and travel meals. An itemized meal receipt should have the name of the establishment, the date of service, the items purchased, the amount paid for each item, and the tax.
The main thing to remember is not to leave the customer copy of your credit card receipt at a restaurant, and really, there are multiple reasons for this. Most people don't fill out the customer copy, so leaving a blank one gives an unscrupulous waiter the opportunity to adjust the tip in their favor after you leave.
Find the restaurant copy of the receipt. Write the amount you wish to tip on the “tip" line, immediately below the amount. On the “total" line below, write the sum of the amount and the tip (yes, there is math involved, though if you don't do it, somebody will do it for you). Sign on the signature line at the bottom.

Keep every invoice and bill. Don't throw away your invoices, bills, or credit card statements. Organize by due date. When you first get invoices or bills, file them in chronological order by due date. Create a spreadsheet or use software. Keep every receipt. Make notes on your receipts. Scan your receipts.
Depending on the server and establishment, you may or may not have a tip added if you didn't add one yourself. If you dispute the charge, the restaurant will produce the original receipt for what you ordered, as well as a copy of the receipt you did not sign.
The only time the absence of a signature becomes an issue and risk for the merchant is when the credit card charge is disputed by the cardholder, also called a “chargeback." It is then up to the merchant to “prove" the charge was legitimate by submitting to the credit card company that the cardholder, in fact, did
Most restaurants will create a receipt to: Ensure that their customer has a correct accounting of what they were charged and what they paid. Keep an additional record for their own books. To ensure that their servers aren't simply pocketing the customer's cash payments.
Now that receipt signatures are no longer required, you and your customers might be wondering what to do about that signature panel on the back of credit cards. For now, yes, as most of the card networks still require cardholder credit card signatures and note that the cards aren't valid without them.
It is advised to keep signed credit card receipts for at least 18 months for chargeback rebuttal. As for tax purposes, it is recommended that merchants keep signed receipts for at least 3 years. Requirements vary based on location and tax laws.
If you look at the back of your credit card, you'll see the small print that tells you your credit card isn't valid unless it's signed. But what happens if you don't sign your credit card? Technically, nothing, other than you may be required to do so before a cashier will complete your transaction.
