The first sentence of the letter should give your name, provide your current school, and indicate clearly that you are resigning. The next section can highlight the reasons behind the resignation, but keep in mind this letter will become part of your employee record. So when giving reasons, try to keep them general.
Be concise. When composing your letter, keep it short and straight to the point. Give proper notice. Maintain professionalism. Arrange for an exit interview. Be certain about your decision.
Dear Principal's Name: This letter is my formal notice that I am resigning from my job as high school English Teacher in Name of School. My last day of attendance will be DATE, which is the last day of this school year. I have decided to accept the position of Curator of the City Fine Arts Museum.
If you resign mid-year, you will probably walk away with nothing in terms of future salary. Another financial consideration is that if you resign from teaching, you will find it hard to file for unemployment insurance.
Therefore, teachers who wish to leave their jobs should observe the following deadlines when giving their notice: to leave at 31 December, give notice by no later than 31 October; to leave at 30 April, give notice by no later than 28 February; to leave at 31 August, give notice by no later than 31 May.
Notice periods and dismissal Head teachers are entitled to a minimum of three months' notice and in the summer term, to a minimum of four months' notice.
It is important to note that these provisions only allow teachers to resign their posts with effect from the end of term. There is no right to leave at half-term unless this is mutually agreed by the teacher and the school (see below).

Explain precisely the reason for the resignation. Refrain from writing anything negative or expressing frustrations. Use a polite and official language. Mention the date when the resignation will be effective.
