Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
Choose a Certifying Body. After applying for a license, a facility should contact a Pre-approved certification body (CB) to conduct the audit and issue the R2 certificate. Preparation and Training. Do your research. Create a business plan. Obtain any necessary permits or licenses. Run your business ethically and legally.
Real, environmentally sustainable electronics recycling can be profitable only if recycling companies charge a fee to take on old machines. The sale of recycled materials rarely if ever covers the actual cost of recycling in the United States. The toxic machines are then left in the scrapyards or dumped nearby.
A new method of recycling electronic waste is by giving it to specialty companies that will exchange money for the waste. These companies will collect different types of waste, inspect, and either re-certify the product for sale in secondary markets or properly dispose of the item.
1. Bring It to the Recycler. Plenty of nonprofit organizations and local communities offer options to help you recycle old electronics. One group, Call2Recycle, offers drop-off locations for rechargeable batteries and cell phones all over the U.S. To find a location, just enter your ZIP code at Call2Recycle.org.
R2 certification (sometimes referred to as responsible recycling certification) is a company level certification based on the R2 standard overseen by the R2 Technical Advisory Committee (TAC). This certification is intended for electronics recyclers. Certification is issued by third party certifying bodies.
Recycling companies interested in obtaining a R2 certification must insure facility operations meet R2 standards. Submit an application along with the $1,500 annual R2 Fee ($1,000 for tax-exempt organizations).
Recyclers can be certified to show their conformance to these standards. One is called the e-Stewards Standard for Responsible Recycling and Reuse of Electronic Equipment®, known as e-Stewards, and the other is called Responsible Recycling (R2) Practices, known as R2.
