Do you have to pay extra to recycle?
Why isn't recycling always free? This brings down the cost of running the program and makes recycling more economical than waste disposal. On average, these programs will charge a household $8-$12 a month or more for trash collection and around $3-$5 a month to collect recyclables.
Does it cost extra to recycle?
A well-run curbside recycling program can cost anywhere from $50 to more than $150 per ton trash collection and disposal programs, on the other hand, cost anywhere from $70 to more than $200 per ton. This demonstrates that, while there's still room for improvements, recycling can be cost-effective.
Why does it cost to recycle?
Recycling costs money because the material must be hauled and managed before it can be used in new products. A service fee is paid to have your garbage picked up at the curb, transferred, and buried at a landfill. Similar to the costs of waste hauling, it also costs money to pick up, transfer, and process recyclables.
How much do you have to pay to recycle?
In states with bottle bills, you can redeem many of the cans and bottles you buy for cash, usually 5 to 10 cents a bottle. You pay the deposit when you buy the product, so redeeming these empties is a great way to recycle, while putting a little change back in your pocket.

Do I have to pay to recycle?
California is one of just 11 states with container deposit laws, which allow residents to redeem bottles for money. Californians get a 5¢ refund for containers under 24 oz. or under and 10¢ for any above or equal to 24oz. The containers have to be made of aluminum, glass, plastic, or bi-metal. Refillable are exempt.

Need to know: While recycling the above items is free of charge, for a $10 fee, customers can recycle computers, laptops, printers, scanners, faxes, all-in-ones, CRTs monitors and LCD monitors.

Recycling programs lessen the demand for virgin resources and raw materials. Because it requires less energy to recycle materials than to process raw materials into products, we are spared unnecessary pollution and waste cleanup costs.
