Microsoft Word (version 2007 and above) is the primary software program used to open and edit DOCX files. Actually, you don't even need to open a DOCX file with Word because Microsoft has this free Word Viewer program that lets you open Word documents like DOCX files without needing to have MS Office installed.
If you need to open a . DOCX file on your phone or tablet and haven't yet installed the free Microsoft Word app, start by doing so now. Android: Open the Play Store app in the app drawer, search for Microsoft Word, and then tap INSTALL on the app.
Open. Doc files with Microsoft Word. Go to File > Save As. Select the Folder or Path where you want to save the file. Name the file or rename the file. Click on Save as types drop down menu. Select Word Document (*.docx) Click on Save.
If you don't have Word installed, or your version of Word is older than 2000, you can still open and print a DOCX file using the Word viewer in addition to the Compatibility Pack. You must have both the Microsoft Word reader and the compatibility pack installed to open DOCX files.
