If you don't need the performance of R's fast XLS, but you do need the flexibility to work in multiple data types, and you need to create custom macros to deal with complex data sets, then the XLSX interface will satisfy your needs. To use this interface instead of R's, create an XLSX workbook as usual for that data type. Then, in either the Insert menu or in your Excel spreadsheet, create a new object named “Leader” and set its datatype property to an existing data type. The datatype property has a range named range, which can be used to select the subset containing data as in the following example. For example: You can create simple XLSX workbooks that contain charts, lists, or data that is read from a variety of sources within the workbook. If the XLS interface is suitable for the data you are working with, then it can be much faster than R's..
