Under the law, to get a state-issued driver's license or identification card, applicants have to provide photo ID, proof of their Social Security number and date of birth, and proof of a permanent residence. For each of those categories, only certain documents are acceptable, such as a lease, a W-2 form or a pay stub.
So far, 25 states and Washington, D.C., have begun using Real ID driver's licenses. Under the law, to get a state-issued driver's license or identification card, applicants have to provide photo ID, proof of their Social Security number and date of birth, and proof of a permanent residence.
You MUST have a street address, so if you're homeless (and not in a shelter), you cannot get a new license or ID card, or renew an existing one.
To Get ID, You Need ID Some states require proof of homelessness, such as a letter from a social services agency. And most states charge a fee to get an identification card not to mention fees of as much as $50 for a copy of a birth certificate.
Short answer: You go to a homeless shelter, and tell them you are homeless. Their paperwork, plus a notary public, can get you a free homeless ID card from the DMV, and another $40 or so will get you a driver's license, with the shelter address. They will also ask if you would like to register to vote.
When your homeless you go to the local post office and register with them and then your address is just your name, and then General Delivery and the city and state. It will go to your post office where they will hold it a certain amount of time, and you show your i.d. and retrieve your mail.
You MUST have a street address, so if you're homeless (and not in a shelter), you cannot get a new license or ID card, or renew an existing one.
Many people assume that a permanent residence is necessary to obtain an ID card because most types of ID, like a driver's license or passport, display the holder's home address. However, homeless people can obtain and use identification documents without a home address.
