Transaction Upon Selling You credit the finished goods inventory, and debit cost of goods sold. This action transfers the goods from inventory to expenses. When you sell the $100 product for cash, you would record a bookkeeping entry for a cash transaction and credit the sales revenue account for the sale.
Check inventory records to find out the finished goods inventory for the previous period. Subtract the cost of goods sold (COGS) from the cost of goods manufactured (COM). Calculate the new finished goods inventory by adding the previous finished goods inventory value to the previous solution (COM minus COGS).
Definition: Finished goods inventory is the third group of inventory owned by a manufacturer and consist of products that are ready for sale. You can think of this like merchandise owned by a retailer. These goods are completely finished, made it through the production process, and ready for consumers to buy.
Add the beginning finished goods inventory to the cost of goods manufactured. This will give you the total goods available for sale. Subtract the cost of goods sold from the total goods available for sale. This will give you the total value of finished goods at the end of the year.
The amount transferred from the Work in Process Inventory account to the Finished Goods Inventory account. Costs that are debited directly to expense accounts when the costs are incurred. The total of all direct labor, direct materials, and manufacturing overhead transferred from work in process to finished goods.
Inventory is regarded as a current asset as the business as it includes raw materials and finished goods that can be converted into cash within one year or less.
When finished goods are sold, the entry to record the cost of goods sold includes: a. a debit to Finished Goods Inventory and a credit to Cost of Goods Sold.
In the case of goods purchased for cash (cash purchase), cash goes out of the business. Purchase a/c will be debited as it is an expense. Golden rules for Nominal accounts says 'Debit all expenses/losses' (refer golden rule for nominal accounts in the link above).
