In a simple approach, a card or ruler showing different pupil sizes is held next to your eye to determine the best match. Your eye doctor may hold a pupil gauge next to your eye to determine the approximate size of your eye's pupil as part of your contact lens eye examination.
All contact lenses have a measurement called the diameter. This measurement is in millimeters and is the size of the lens. The August 2005 issue of “Contact Lens Spectrum” notes that the average contact lens diameter is 14.0 mm.
Find a well-lit area and put your contact lens on the tip of your finger, so that the edges are pointing upwards. Bring your finger down to eye level. Look at your lens. If the sides are rolled along the edge or folded up, then they're inside out.
Contact lenses need to be fit to each individual's eyes. There isn't a one-size-fits-all lens. Each lens can act differently. Even if it fits on the eye initially, it may change once the lens dries out a little or once it's been worn for a few hours.
Q: How long does an eye appointment typically take? A: You should allot 1 hour for your annual eye health examination and an additional 15 minutes if you area former contact lens wearer. You will need additional time with one of our technicians to help train you how to take care and use contacts.
A. If the contact lens fitting is performed on a day separate from the routine eye examination, typically about 15-20 minutes.
Contact Lens Trial and Prescription The doctor or assistant would insert the lenses and keep them in for 15-20 minutes before the doctor exams the fit, movement and tearing in your eye. If after the fitting, the lenses appear to be a good fit, your eye doctor will order the lenses for you.
In most cases, you'll have the opportunity to try lenses on the same day as your exam. You can even go home with a few samples before making a final decision.
Contact Lens Fitting In order to assure that the fitting curve of the lens properly fits the curve of your eye, your doctor will measure the curvature of the cornea or front surface of the eye. The curvature is measured with an instrument called a hectometer to determine the appropriate curve for your contact lenses.
