Open Excel. Select all the data that you want included in the bar chart. Click the Chart Wizard toolbar button, or choose Chart from the Insert menu. Make sure that Column is selected under Chart type (it's the default setting). Select a subtype of bar graph from the display on the right, and click Next.
Give the key message in the chart title. Always include all the metadata. Avoid vertical or diagonal labels in the x-axis. Avoid plotting bars in a random order. Begin your bar chart at zero baseline. Avoid useless decorative details. Avoid 3D bar charts. Choose bars colors carefully.
Select the chart and go to the Chart Tools tabs (Design and Format) on the Excel ribbon. Right-click the chart element you would like to customize, and choose the corresponding item from the context menu. Use the chart customization buttons that appear in the top right corner of your Excel graph when you click on it.
Use appropriate charts, including horizontal bar graphs. Use the full axis. Keep it simple, especially with animations, and make sure with a squint test. Use color to contrast and highlight data.
