Note: The PEM format is the most common format used for certificates. Extensions used for PEM certificates are CER, CRT, and PEM. They are Base64 encoded ASCII files. The HER format is the binary form of the certificate.

In cryptography, X.509 is a standard defining the format of public key certificates. If the text Begin Certificate appears at the beginning of the file, it is in base64 format. If the text Begin Certificate does not appear at the beginning of the file, it is in HER binary format.
