For pdfFiller’s FAQs

Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
If the Footnotes' pane isn't visible click Show Notes on the References tab. From the Footnotes drop-down list select Footnote Separator. The pane will display the separator line. Select the separator line and press DELETE.
Place commas and periods inside quotation marks, e.g., ... [The question mark is logically part of the quotation.] 3. Place footnote calls after all punctuation marks (other than em dashes), except if the footnote relates solely to a parenthetical, in which case places the call within the parentheses.
Direct quotations. Anytime you use somebody else's words, you must put them in quotation marks and footnote your source. A long quote of several lines should be indented and single-spaced. That takes the place of quotation marks, but you still have to footnote your source.
Footnote or end note numbers in the text should follow punctuation, and preferably be placed at the end of a sentence. When citing the source for a quotation, the number should be placed at the end of the quotation and not after the author's name if that appears first in the text.

In Chicago style, footnotes or end notes are used to reference pieces of work in the text. To cite from a source a superscript number is placed after a quote or a paraphrase. Citation numbers should appear in sequential order. Each number than corresponds to a citation, a footnote or to an end note.
Both footnotes and end notes require that a superscript number be placed wherever documentation is necessary. The number should be as near as possible to whatever it refers to, following the punctuation (such as quotation marks, a comma, or a period) that appears at the end of the direct or indirect quotation.
Avoid using superscript note identifiers in headings.' I translate this to mean that you put a footnote link before a comma or semicolon, but after a full stop.
Although, according to the Chicago Manual of Style (Rule 16.25), it is proper to place the superscript footnote inside the semicolon and colon but outside the comma and period, some (very few) biomedical publishers don't like that foolish inconsistency: they demand that all superscript footnotes be outside the ...
