What happens if you don't do the census?

By census law, refusal to answer all or part of the census carries a $100 fine. The penalty goes up to $500 for giving false answers. The Sentencing Reform Act of 1984 effectively raised the penalty to as much as $5,000 for refusing to answer a census question.

Is the census really required by law?

Response to the survey is required by law because the American Community Survey is part of the decennial census, replacing the “long form” that previously was sent to a percentage of households once every 10 years. By law, the U.S. government is required to count the number of people living in the United States every 10 years. Getting an accurate count is important because census numbers impact daily life in the United States in many ways.

Are you required to fill out the census?

You still have time to fill out the 2020 census questionnaire. The census is mandatory and part of the US Constitution (Article 1, Section 2). It legally requires the country to accurately count US residents, whether citizens or not.
