An Initial License requires passing scores on the appropriate MEL exam and completion of a DESE-approved educator preparation program. An Initial License is valid for five years of employment and may be extended once, for five years. After that time, an educator is required to advance to a Professional License.
Initial or temporary licenses are non-renewable, meaning a new teacher must be approved by a school district or state board of education to move on to the next licensing step. Other states start on the initial license and upgrade from there.
The Initial Certificate is the entry-level teaching certificate for anyone who has completed a New York State teacher preparation program, or equivalent coursework and experience. The Initial Certificate is valid for five years.
Provide proof that you hold a bachelor's degree. Hold a 3.0 GPA. Complete approved student-teaching hours. Receive a passing grade on required exams. Pass background clearance by Massachusetts. Submit application for teaching certification. Payment of all fees.
Some aspiring educators may be confused about the difference between teaching certification and teaching certificates. Teacher certification is another term for the licensure required to teach in public schools, while a teaching certificate is awarded upon completion of an academic program.
The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) is responsible for licensing all professional educators in accordance with MEL c. 71, sec. 38G. You can apply for your license and maintain your license through your EAR account at DESE.
Preliminary license: A bachelor's degree and passing scores on the appropriate Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MEL). Initial license: Meet the requirements for a Preliminary license, plus completion of an approved teacher preparation program.
In many cases, you can earn your teaching degree without ever having to attend a traditional college campus classroom. You can also get an MA teaching license even if you attend a school located in another state. Teaching certification requirements differ from state to state.
