Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
How do we calculate your pension input amount? Your pension input amount (PIA) is the difference between the value of your NHS pension benefits at the beginning, the opening value, and the end, the closing value, of the pension input period.
The pension input amount is the increase or growth in the value of a member's benefits over the pension input period. A member has a pension input amount if they were an active member of a registered pension scheme for all or part of the pension input period.
What is a pension input amount? The pension input amount for a defined contribution plan is the amount of contributions made during the pension input period. For defined benefit schemes, the pension input amount is the value of benefits accrued over the pension input period.
For defined contribution schemes, the pension input amount is simply the total of all gross contributions. The provider will gross this up to £60,000 and claim the £12,000 basic rate tax relief from HMRC.
Your annual allowance applies to all of your private pensions, if you have more than one. This includes: the total amount paid in to a defined contribution scheme in a tax year by you or anyone else (for example, your employer) any increase in a defined benefit scheme in a tax year.
We determine the benefits you had built up at the end of the previous Pension Input Period and multiply this by a factor defined by HMRC — currently 16. Any automatic lump sum that you may be eligible for is added to the amount calculated in Step 1.
With a Defined Benefit account, your retirement benefit is calculated by multiplying a number which reflects both your years of service and your contribution rate (your multiple) with your final salary.
To calculate the amount of savings you need to work out the opening value, the closing value and then the difference between the two amounts. Opening value: Find the total amount of annual pension built up immediately prior to the start of the year/pension input period and multiply this amount by 16.
