Its good for the most part - the downside is it doesnt open for me on the first try and it asks me to sign in everytime i need to print or save a doc. even though I pay for the service. Annoying that it doesnt recognize me when I use the app.

There have been letters on the phones, at least in the US since 1917. Because the letters are standardized, they can be exchanged for words. This actually makes it easier to remember a phone number. Substituting letters and words makes it easier for a phone number to be remembered.
The phone numbers don't have letters in them the phones themselves have letters on the numbers which are used in association to the corresponding number they are printed on. All phones, mobiles included, have the letters on the keys.
They used to start with letters. Up until about the 1950s, phone numbers were alphanumeric, eventually settling on a 2-letter, 5-number system that usually identified the region of the phone number and also aimed to make it more memorable.
The letters were mapped to digits in order for people to dial the letters. But number 1 and 0 was reserved for long distance calls and operator, respectively. They could therefore not be used in the prefix. Therefore, the numbers 2-9 was used to map letters and number.
In the most areas of North America, telephone numbers in metropolitan communities consisted of a combination of digits and letters, starting in the 1920s until the 1960s. Letters were translated to dialed digits, a mapping that was displayed directly on the telephone dial.
As you can see on the keypad, each number from 2-9 corresponds to 3 or 4 letters. That number can be any of those 3 or 4 letters, so 1 press of “2” corresponds to either an “A” “B” or “C”. So dialing 1-800-555-APPL would be 1-800-555-2775 (just an example). This is the same for all phones, not just the iPhone.
Dial 1-8-0-0 or whatever the number prefix is. When you get to the letter, press the ALT key and hold and press the letters you need.
phone number. In instances where a phone number consists of words/letters, the letters correspond to the specific number on the telephone keypad. For example, if a phone number was 555-TESTING, the letter 'T' would correspond to the number 8, the letter 'E' would correspond to the number 3, 'S' to 7, and so on.
