Declare a variable u and substitute it into the integral: Differentiate u = 4x + 1 and isolate the x term. This gives you the differential, Du = 4dx. Substitute Du/4 for DX in the integral: Evaluate the integral: Substitute back 4x + 1 for u:
The General Power Rule for Integration It is the exact opposite of the power rule for differentiation. When we take the integral of the function, we first add 1 to the exponent, and then divide the term by the sum of the exponent and 1. After we have done this to each term, we add a constant at the end.
Integration is a way of adding slices to find the whole. Integration can be used to find areas, volumes, central points and many useful things. But it is easiest to start with finding the area under the curve of a function like this: What is the area under y = f(x) ?

For this reason, when we integrate, we have to add a constant. So the integral of 2 is 2x + c, where c is a constant. A “S” shaped symbol is used to mean the integral of, and DX is written at the end of the terms to be integrated, meaning “with respect to x”. This is the same “DX” that appears in Dy/DX.
