The IT-201 is the main income tax form for New York State residents. It is analogous to the US Form 1040, but it is four pages long, instead of two pages. The first page of IT-201 is mostly a recap of information that flows directly from the federal tax forms.
You are entitled to this refundable credit if: Your household gross income is $18,000 or less. You occupied the same New York residence for six months or more. You were a New York State resident for the entire tax year. Furthermore, you could not be claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer's federal income tax return.
Generally, you must file a New York State income tax return if you're a New York State resident and are required to file a federal return. Furthermore, you may also have to file a New York State return if you're a nonresident of New York and you have income from New York State sources.
IRS Form 1041, U.S. Income Tax Return for Estates and Trusts, is required if the estate generates more than $600 in annual gross income. The decedent and their estate are separate taxable entities. Before filing Form 1041, you will need to obtain a tax ID number for the estate.
