Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
Label — Brand or imprint used by the record company to identify their releases. The label on a release can usually be identified by having a prominent logo. Labels are usually important to enter a submission — if a release has a label or labels mentioned, they are required to be entered.
Record labels are companies that market recorded music and corresponding videos. They engage in a wide range of functions in the music industry, including new artist recruitment and development (known as A&R, which stands for artist and repertoire), music publishing, and copyright enforcement.
Record labels work directly with artists and producers to coordinate the writing and production of the recordings, and then coordinate the manufacturing, distribution, marketing, promotion of the recording to ensure it sells around the world.
When an artist gets signed to a label they get money, called an 'advance,' to make a record. When the record is released, the label keeps all the money until they have recouped their expenses, which includes the advance, recording costs, promotion and legal fees. Record companies make around $10.00 profit per CD.
Record labels are basically your management staff and a bank. They pay advances, money to help you record your songs. A record label can also help you get on the radio (which won't give a random musician play time). A record label helps with distribution of CDs (which are still a big moneymaker).
Record labels are businesses. They will usually drop a singer because they aren't making them enough money anymore. Or the artist might not be holding up their end of the contract. The artist want to do something different to what they label wants, and they start fighting.
If the album does not contain any marketable songs, IE: something radio can strongly get behind (labels can usually do research to see if a song will be a hit before it is released), then the label will either drop the artist or have them re-record as much of the album as needed.
If a record label won't make a recording available to the public, it has to return it to the artist so that they can release it. Bigger artists often have a “key-man clause” in their contracts, which means they can leave if the person who signed them is let go.
