Start a backup: Click the Time Machine icon in the menu bar, then choose Back Up Now. Pause a backup: Click the Time Machine icon in the menu bar, then choose Skip This Backup. Resume a backup: Click the Time Machine icon in the menu bar, then choose Back Up Now.

This is because Time Machine copies most or all of the data on your Mac to your first backup. You can keep using your Mac while Time Machine works in the background to back up your data. If you want to pause a backup and finish it later, select Skip This Backup from the Time Machine menu.
To stop automatic backups go to System Preferences > Time Machine. Deselect Back up Automatically. When you next want to back up your Mac click on the greyed-out Time Machine icon in your menu bar and choose Back Up Now.

To start a manual Time Machine backup, press the Time Machine icon on the menu bar and start the backup. If you don't find the Time Machine icon, you can enable it in System Preferences > Time Machine. Otherwise, backups will occur automatically each hour.
