Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Information for Employers. The California WARN Act requires covered employers to provide advance notice to employees affected by plant closings and mass layoffs.
California and federal WARN laws give employees the right to notice of a layoff. However, employees do have the right to a certain amount of notice before a plant closing or large-scale layoff. If the employer fails to give proper notice, employees are entitled to damages.
Large-scale layoffs require 60 days notice. Inform impacted workers if the layoff is permanent or temporary. If temporary, give dates as to the duration of the event. Notify employees of their expected separation date. Clearly explain the recall process.
