LAID is a finish has the appearance of fine lines running the length of the paper. It is produced during the papermaking process with a special roller that creates the pattern in the wet paper.
Laid paper is a type of paper having a ribbed texture imparted by the manufacturing process. In the 19th century its use diminished as it was largely supplanted by wove paper. Laid paper is still commonly used by artists as a support for charcoal drawings.
The word “finish” essentially means the treatment of the surface of the paper. In other words a paper may feel very smooth, or it may feel rough.
The thin wires are the laid lines and the thicker wires are the chain lines. Baskerville believed his finely designed type would translate better on paper that didn't contain chain lines, because chain lines create small areas of distortion in the surface of the paper, while wove paper is smooth and consistent.
A paper with a laid texture has the look of a classical hand-crafted paper. There are both horizontal and vertical lines in the sheet that are impressed into the paper during manufacturing. Laid papers are often used for letterheads, presentations, and whenever one desires a distinctive and rich feel.
This type of paper, known as laid paper, is thinner where the pulp touched the wires, making a latticework pattern easily seen when you hold it up to a light. The example shown below also has a watermark. Notice that there are no shadows along the chain lines of the paper seen above, which has a watermark dated 1823.
