Switch to Draft View and then click on Show Notes in the Footnotes section of the References tab of the ribbon and then from the dropdown in the Footnotes' header bar, select Footnote Separator and then with it selected, go to the Format Paragraph dialog and change the indent as required.
Using the Footnotes drop-down list at the top of the Footnotes window, choose Footnote Separator. The current separator appears in the window, and the insertion point should be within the separator. Use Word's regular formatting tools to change the paragraph indentation on the separator. Click on Close.
Go to View tab. Select “Draft” view option. Go to References tab. Select “Show Notes” Select “Footnote Separator” from the dropdown list.
When Jim prints his document, the footnotes appear as they should at the bottom of each page. Just above the footnotes and below the page's text is the footnote separator. It lines up with the indented first line of a normal paragraph. ... The footnote separator is inserted, automatically, by Word in its own paragraph.
If your documents contain footnotes or end notes, you will have run into the concept of separators, which are the short (or long) lines Word inserts between your body text and the footnotes at the bottom of the page or the end notes at the end of the document or section.
If the Footnotes' pane isn't visible click Show Notes on the References tab. From the Footnotes drop-down list select Footnote Separator. The pane will display the separator line. Select the separator line and press DELETE.
