How much time does it take to transcribe an hour of audio? The short answer: The industry standard is four hours of transcription time for one hour of clear audio, or a 4:1 ratio that is, one hour of transcription time for a 15-minute-long recording.
An experienced professional can transcribe one hour of audio in about three hours for a 1:3 turnaround time. A newer transcriptionist will need even more time. This means $25 per audio hour means that well, it's probably not worth your time. A respectable place to start is somewhere around $50 to $60 per audio hour.
Generally you can expect to pay 75 cents to $1.50 per audio minute for transcription services.
Even for our professional transcribers who work with transcription software and foot pedals (which free up the hands for typing), transcription of 1 minute of audio usually takes about 3-5 minutes of work. This means that an hour of audio takes 3-5 hours of work.
A transcriptionist's salary is generally around $15, while an advanced transcriptionist earns around $25 to $30 per hour. With this rate, you can easily earn $1,500 every month if you work 2.5 hours per day for 24 days. According to PayScale, the median transcriptionists' salary is $15.22 per hour.
