To change the formatting of the footnote numbers, select the Footnotes Reference Style. If you want to change the formatting of the footnote text at the bottom of the page, select the Footnote Text Style. Click Modify, and then change the formatting options (font, size, and so on).
Open the document. There are two different ways to do this: ... Hover the mouse cursor over the footnote. An icon that looks like a tag will appear. Double-click the tag icon. Now you'll see an editable version of your footnote. Make changes to the footnote. ... Click somewhere else in the file.
Do one of the following: To change the formatting of the footnote numbers, select the Footnotes Reference Style. To edit the text of a footnote or end note, click in the note, or click the anchor for the note in the text. To change the format of a footnote, click in the footnote, press F11 to open the Styles and Formatting window, right-click “Footnote” in the list, and then choose To modify.
Click where you want to reference to the footnote or end note. On the References tab, select Insert Footnote or Insert End note. Enter what you want in the footnote or end note. Return to your place in the document by double-clicking the number or symbol at the beginning of the note.
To get the footnote separator to appear in the right to left direction, you will need to switch to Draft View and the click on Show Notes in the Footnotes section of the References tab of the ribbon and then from the dropdown in the footnotes page, select Footnote Separator and format the paragraph as right to left.
