Count a total number of characters In the cell, enter =SUM(LEN(A2), LEN(A3), LEN(A4)) and press Enter.
Select the cell where you want the result to appear. On the Formulas tab, click More Functions, point to Statistical, and then click one of the following functions: COUNTY: To count cells that are not empty. COUNT: To count cells that contain numbers. Select the range of cells that you want, and then press RETURN.
Press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to get the SUM of the required text values as this is an array formula.
Select a cell next to the numbers you want to sum: To sum a column, select the cell immediately below the last value in the column. Click the AutoSum button on either the Home or Formulas tab. Press the Enter key to complete the formula.
