Black Seal License Requirements. To apply for a Black Seal license, you must be at least 18 years old and currently working in a facility with a low-pressure boiler over 100 horsepower or have a minimum of 90 days' experience with a high-pressure boiler over 100 horsepower.
Black Seal Low Pressure Boiler License: $550. Boiler License: $550 — $650. Black seal high pressure license: $4,000.
Black Seal High-Pressure Operator Overview: The Black Seal, High Pressure license is required for boilers over 100 hp and more than 15 pounds pressure steam. If it's a hot water heating system the boilers must be over 160 psi with a water temperature over 250° Fahrenheit.
A qualified applicant must have 2,000 hours of operating experience or 1,000 hours of operating experience and the completion of a 125-hour course, or a high-pressure boiler operating license and 500 hours of operating experience. The fee for the license is $35 as of 2010. The license must be renewed each year.
All licenses must be renewed within either one or three years. The cost renewal is $80 for one year and $160 for three. You need to send a copy of your current license ID card along with a check for the renewal fee payable to the state of New Jersey.
