Be at least 15 years old. Have consent from a parent or legal guardian. Completed the required classroom portion of the Texas parent taught drivers ed course. Provide proof of a Verification of Enrollment and Attendance (VOTE) form, high school diploma, or GED.
Individuals 15 1/2 to 17 1/2 years of age must be simultaneously enrolled in or have passed a driver education course to be eligible for a learner's permit. Drivers must hold the permit for at least 6 months and accumulate at least 50 hours (10 at night) of parental/guardian certified driving experience.
You can take the Permit test at 14 1/2, but you cannot go to the DMV and get your permit until you are 15. Yes, you can go on your 15th birthday. Just be sure to bring the necessary ID and proof of residency documents.
Once you are at least 15 1/2 years of age, you may take the DMV's written test for your permit. You will need to make a DMV appointment for the written test. We recommend that you wait until you have your certificate in hand before making an appointment to avoid rescheduling.
