The Physician Payments Sunshine Act — or, simply, the Sunshine Act — is an extension of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that aims to increase public transparency for the transactions made between healthcare providers and other individuals and corporations.
Physician financial transparency reports (Sunshine Act) The Physician Payments Sunshine Act (PDF) is designed to increase transparency around the financial relationships (PDF) between physicians, teaching hospitals and manufacturers of drugs, medical devices and biologics.
The Physician Payments Sunshine Act (PSA)--also known as section 6002 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010--requires medical product manufacturers to disclose to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) any payments or other transfers of value made to physicians or teaching hospitals.
The act requires manufacturers of drugs, medical devices and biological, and group purchasing organizations (GPO's) that participate in U.S. federal healthcare programs to report payments, transfers, ownership and items of value given to physicians and teaching hospitals.
In August 2013 a new piece of legislation, the Physician Payments Sunshine Act went into effect. Under the Sunshine Act, physician and research hospitals have to report any payments and transfers of value from manufacturers. The Sunshine Act may get another boost in 2018.
