Paper patches let a shooter get the same velocities from lead bullets as with jacketed bullets. The paper acts like a jacket and keeps the lead from smearing in the bore. Paper patches can be used to make slightly undersized bullets fit a gun with an odd caliber barrel. They help with accuracy.
A cast bullet is made by allowing molten metal to solidify in a mold. Most cast bullets are made of lead alloyed with tin and antimony; but zinc alloys have been used when lead is scarce, and may be used again in response to concerns about lead toxicity.
Lead Alloy bullets and Bullet Rounds A lead bullet is a projectile. Thousands of years ago lead bullets were fired from slings but since the mid-fourteenth century bullet has meant a projectile fired from a firearm.
But what is a paper patched bullet? It is simply a smooth sided elongated bullet that has a piece of paper wrapped around its bearing surface.
There are several lead alloys used in bullet casting. They utilize varying amounts of tin and antimony, as well as trace amounts of other metals, in order to harden the bullet and to make it cast better. High ratios of antimony will harden lead considerably, but at the expense of brittleness.
The most direct solution is switching to lead-free ammunition or at least jacketed bullets, which have a lead core covered with a coating made of copper or nylon. Lead has been traditionally favored because of its density, but the military has since developed lead-free ammunition that reportedly works just as well.
Many gun owners refer to hard cast bullets as 'lead' bullets. ... Hard cast bullets can be formulated of numerous alloy mixes (antimony, silver, tin, etc) containing some lead, but the alloys make the bullet much harder than pure lead. Pure lead has a Brinell hardness # of about 4.
Walk along Moderator. Joined: Nov 20, 2006 Messages: 58,306 Location: Alabama. Hard cast is often used to mean anything not swagged, which is real soft. The BAN of the alloy is what you need to know. There is no defined use of hard cast, so the hardness could vary quite a bit and be called hard cast by the maker.
Ranger, anything other than ALL lead bullets are not an option when using steel targets due to bullet splatter..... And they do not damage or hurt the barrel any worse than jacketed bullets. At the slow velocities we use, barrel leading is rarely a problem when using a good quality hard cast bullet.
Linotype metal is a eutectic alloy of 3% tin, 12% antimony, and 85% lead. It is a very satisfactory alloy for casting most bullets. However, bullets from Linotype alloy tend to be brittle, and not suitable for some game hunting.
