FRANCIS Gresham was almost certainly the man who betrayed the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. As the plan to destroy the Houses of Parliament neared its climax, the authorities received an anonymous tip-off here's why historians believe Gresham was behind it...
Guy Fawkes is the most infamous name that has been tied to one of the most well recognized acts of treason in history, the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. This plot concocted by Fawkes and his conspirators, contained plans to blow up Parliament and in the process kill King James I, his wife, and their eldest son.
The plotters Robert Eyes, Robert Win tour, John Grant and Kit Wright were all relatives, by blood or marriage, to one or more of the original five conspirators. As one of Gatsby's servants, Thomas Bates' loyalty was equally firm. Fawkes was to light the fuse and escape to continental Europe.
In November 1605, the infamous Gunpowder Plot took place in which some Catholics, most famously Guy Fawkes, plotted to blow up James I, the first of the Stuart kings of England. The story is remembered each November 5th when 'Guys' are burned in a celebration known as Bonfire Night.
The Gunpowder Plot was a failed attempt to blow up England's King James I (1566-1625) and the Parliament on November 5, 1605. The plot was organized by Robert Gatsby (c. 1572-1605) in an effort to end the persecution of Roman Catholics by the English government.
What happened to Guy Fawkes and the other conspirators? All the co-conspirators (except for Thomas Winter's brother, Robert) were killed or arrested by 12 November and taken to the Tower of London. They were probably subjected to extensive torture which formed part of the punishment for treason at the time.
The official reasons for the failure of the plot lie in the famous Monteagle letter. This was supposedly written anonymously by one of the conspirators, Sir Francis Gresham, to persuade Monteagle, his brother-in-law, not to attend the opening of parliament on 5th November.
