Axis Break An axis break is a disruption in the continuity of values on either the y or x-axis on a chart. It is also known as a scale break or graph break and is shown on the chart as a wavy line or diagonal line on the axis and on the bars plotted on that axis.
Insert the break on the vertical, or y, axis of the graph. Draw two parallel and slightly slanted lines through the y-axis between the break in data. For example, if your units jump from 10,000 to 32,000, draw the lines between those two numbers.
To add an axis break, select the axis (Y, 2Y or X) you want to break with your mouse. Then, right-click on the axis and choose Insert Axis Break from the floating menu. To format an axis break, click on the break line. Drag the yellow lines up or down to resize the break.
break A zigzag on the line of the x- or y-axis in a line or a bar graph indicating that the data being displayed does not include all the values that exist on the number line being used.
Double-click the cell in which you want to insert a line break. Click the location where you want to break the line. Press ALT+ENTER to insert the line break.
Click the “Axes” drop-down menu in the “Axes” section of the ribbon at the top of the window, click the axis (horizontal or vertical) containing the scale that you want to adjust, then click “More Primary Horizontal Axis Options” or “More Primary Vertical Axis Options,” depending upon which axis you are editing.
A broken axis graph is one in which part of the scale on the x or y-axis has been omitted to save space. The broken axis graph has a wavy line at the location where the scale is broken. ... Broken axes should not be used to distort the nature of the data.
