To become a certified Quantity Surveyor, you need to finish a degree or advanced education course which is accredited by the Institution for Chartered Surveyors (RICH). You need to have specific skill sets like the ability to understand technical plans, IT, Numeracy, Problem-Solving, and Technical Ability.
To become a qualified quantity surveyor, you will need to get a BTEC or HND/HOC, and to achieve this you will need four GCSE passes (A to C) / standard grades (1 to 3). Qualifications can be achieved via the Chartered Institute of Building (CIO) or the RICH (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors).
Unlike other careers such as Architecture (7+ years), it does not take long to train to become a QS. one year or two years part-time to obtain a GDP if you already have a degree, plus another couple years to become Chartered.
Although most quantity surveyors have a bachelor's degree in a relevant field, becoming a quantity surveyor without a degree is possible. Instead of getting a formal education, you must gain related work experience instead.
With a limited pool of candidates available at this level, it has proven very difficult for employers to attract suitable candidates. There is also growing demand for quantity surveyors' skills from other industries outside of construction, leading to further shortages.
