Your census responses are safe and secure. The Census Bureau is required by law to protect any personal information we collect and keep it strictly confidential. In fact, every Census Bureau employee takes an oath to protect your personal information for life.
IRS to share tax data with Census Bureau. According to the IRS, no personal details will be disclosed when the data are shared.
It is against the law for any Census Bureau employee to disclose or publish any census or survey information that identifies an individual or business. This is true even for inter-agency communication: the FBI and other government entities do not have the legal right to access this information.
By census law, refusal to answer all or part of the census carries a $100 fine. The penalty goes up to $500 for giving false answers. In 1976, Congress eliminated both the possibility of a 60-day prison sentence for noncompliance and a one-year prison term for false answers.
When you respond to the census, your answers are kept anonymous. They are used only to produce statistics. The U.S. Census Bureau is bound by law to protect your answers and keep them strictly confidential.
