Also known as a printer's key or publisher's code, the number line is a string of numbers printed on the copyright page, and it is used to indicate the print run for the book. ... With each printing of a book, the publisher instructs the printer to remove the lowest number that indicated that run.
The printer's key, also known as the number line, is a line of text printed on the copyright page (often the verso of the title page, especially in English-language publishing) of books, used to indicate the print run. Publishers began this convention about the middle of the 20th century.

The number line, or printer's key, often seen on the copyright page of books is simply a method of record-keeping that helps identify the book's printing and, for some, year of printing a specific book, which may or may not be different from the original copyright date listed elsewhere on the page.
It is usually the page immediately following the title page of the book. View the first few lines of the copyright page of the book. Note the name of the author of the publication along with the title of the work. Move your eyes down the page, and you will see the book's ISBNs.
When a particular book is printed for the first time by a particular publisher, that's the first printing, or impression. (The first printing is also what book collectors call a first edition. Subsequent printings would be, for example, a 2nd printing but not a first edition.)
Number Lines: Generally speaking, if the 1 is present, the book is a first edition (first edition, first printing). For the second printing, the 1 is removed, so the 2 is the lowest number present. For example, a number line that reads 5 6 7 8 9 indicates a fifth printing.
Look for text that states the edition of the book. Sometimes, the publisher will clearly write which edition of the book you have on the bottom of the copyright page. ... Check the year the book was copyrighted versus when it was published. ... Use the number line to determine the printing.

This 10 or 13-digit number identifies a specific book, an edition of a book, or a book-like product (such as an audiobook). Since 1970 each published book has a unique ISBN. In 2007, assigned ISBNs changed from 10 digits to 13. On most books, the ISBN can be found on the back cover, next to the barcode.
