Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
On average, traditional publishers pay authors around $1.25 per book in royalties. So if your book sells for $20, you earn just over a buck.
As we can see from many authors and agents the average first time author is projected to earn around $10,000 for their new book. After you pay your agent and invest in promotion, there isn't much left over.
Royalties off books sales The net amount is typically 50% of the book's price. So for example, if a book as a list price of $25.00, that means that if your contract says you get 10% royalties off list, then you will get $2.50 per book. If you are getting 10% of net profits, then you'd get around $1.25 per book.
Short answer: NO. Longer answer: You should never, full stop, pay someone to put your book out (unless you're vanity publishing a few copies for personal distribution, which is different). There are, however, occasions when you are going to need to put some money down before your book is ready.
LEGITIMATE publishers do not charge money for publishing a book. They make their money by taking a percentage of money the book makes. Acquisition publishers (advance against royalties) don't. Hybrid publishers often ask the author for some money but really make their money on book sales.
The cost of self-publishing on Amazon Unlike vanity presses, which make authors pay for publication, Amazon won't charge you any money upfront to self-publish your book. Instead, delivery costs (for e-books) and printing costs (for paperbacks) are subtracted from your royalties.

Traditional book publishing is when a publisher offers the author a contract and, in turn, prints, publishes, and sells your book through booksellers and other retailers. The publisher essentially buys the right to publish your book and pays you royalties from the sales.
