Direct Unsubsidized Loans (sometimes called Unsubsidized Stafford Loans) are low-cost, fixed-rate federal student loans available to both undergraduate and graduate students. Financial need is not required, so even students from wealthier families can borrow Direct Unsubsidized Loans.
To qualify for an unsubsidized loan, or direct unsubsidized loan, you first need to visit and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Applying for the FAFSA is free and if you qualify for an unsubsidized loan your school will notify you.
Be an undergraduate student. Be able to prove financial need. Be enrolled at a school at least half-time. Be enrolled in a program that can lead to a degree or certificate awarded by the school.
What is an unsubsidized student loan? Students who lack the resources are granted unsubsidized student loans, federally-guaranteed loans that start accruing interest as soon as the loan is disbursed. It is a fixed interest rate loan and students are not required to start making payments while still in school.
$57,500 for undergraduates No more than $23,000 of this amount may be in subsidized loans. The aggregate loan limits include any Subsidized Federal Stafford Loans or Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans you may have previously received under the Federal Family Education Loan (FEEL) Program.
