How long do you keep DOT maintenance records?
Maintenance records for a company's vehicles must be kept for at least 12 months. If a company leases or sells a vehicle, those records must be kept for whichever occurs first: a) the remaining time left of the 12 months, or b) 6 months from when the vehicle leaves the company's control.
How often are DOT inspections required?
AUGUST 9, 2016, Annual or Periodic DOT Vehicle Inspections (the inspections in which you receive a sticker on the CMV indicating that it has passed inspection) must be conducted by a Qualified Inspector at a minimum of once every 12 months.
What is required for a DOT inspection?
The annual DOT Inspection is required of all CMV's that have a OVER of 10,001 lbs or more, as defined in the definition of a CMV in CFR 390.5. CFR 396.17 requires that all CMV's that meet the above definition be inspected annually, according to Appendix G of the FMCSA regulations.
Are post trip inspections mandatory?
'pre-VIP' inspections are not required by regulation — all that is required is that the driver is satisfied that the equipment is safe to operate. The best way to determine that is by doing a PRE trip inspection. Even a post trip inspection is not required.
Can you refuse a DOT inspection?
Yes, you can refuse to assist a DOT inspection. That's right, you can legally refuse a DOT inspection, but be prepared to lose your job and have no chance of finding another one. There are going to be consequences of your refusal to assist. No trucking company out there is going to want you driving their trucks.

Are post trips required by law?
Guidance: Section 396.11(a) requires every driver to prepare a DVR at the completion of each day's work on each vehicle operated. A driver who operates two or more vehicles in a 24-hour-period must prepare a DVR at the completion of the tour of duty in each vehicle.
