The origin of the water part of a watermark can be found back when a watermark was something that only existed in paper. ... This was done while the paper was still wet/watery and therefore the mark created by this process is called a watermark. Watermarks were first introduced in Fabiano, Italy, in 1282.
A watermark protects digital intellectual property, such as photos and artwork, from unauthorized use. It identifies the rightful owner of the work, which discourages other people from using it as their own.
Originally a watermark is a more or less transparent image or text that has been applied to a piece of paper, another image to either protect the original image, or to make it harder to copy the item e.g. money watermarks or stamp watermarks.
”Watermarking” is the process of hiding digital information in a carrier signal; the hidden information should, but does not need to, contain a relation to the carrier signal. Digital watermarks may be used to verify the authenticity or integrity of the carrier signal or to show the identity of its owners.
A watermark is a message (usually a logo, stamp, or signature) superimposed onto an image, with a great deal of transparency. So, it's still possible to visualize its presence without interrupting or preventing vision of the image that it protects.

With that being said, the key to an effective watermark is to make it visible without being distracting at all; this can be tricky.
