I mainly use it to edit papers for my teaching position; it's been very useful to not alter the original format while adding my view point freely on the document.

Traditionally, a watermark was made by impressing a water-coated metal stamp or dandy roll onto the paper during manufacturing. If these lines are distinct and parallel, and/or there is a watermark, then the paper is termed laid paper.
Click on Page Layout tab (Word 2010) or the Design tab (Word 2013) In the ribbon, click on Watermark. A vertical scroll list of six watermarks will appear with a set of menu options below. From the menu options, select Custom Watermark.
A watermark is a faded background image that displays behind the text in a document. You can use them to indicate a document's state (confidential, draft, etc.), add a subtle company logo, or even for a bit of artistic flair.
When you hold a hundred dollar bill up to the light, you can see its watermark. The term watermark comes from the way these designs are created, during the “wet paper” stage of making paper, and also from the fact that a watermark resembles a damp spot.
To see if your stamp has a watermark, place it face down in a watermark tray, and pour enough watermark fluid over it to cover completely. (Never use water.) The watermark should be visible. How well it shows varies with the stamp. You may not see a whole letter or design, but only part of one.

The first watermark that appeared on U.S. postage stamps was the “double-line” USPS, for “United States Postage Stamp”, first used in 1895 on the “First Bureau Issues”. The watermarks were always applied parallel to the top edge of the paper and are never found in any orientation other than the eight described.
