Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
Stratford 400 Series Pastel Paper Assorted Colors This paper works very well for portraits, landscapes, and other situations where the texture can add interest to the drawing. Additionally, it comes in several light pastel colors that work well with graphite.
Most drawing paper has a coarse texture and that will work against you. For graphite drawings with a moderate degree of realism, a drawing paper like Stratford Series 400 is a good place to begin.
Stratford Smooth Papers Stratford 500 Series Plate Drawing or Plate Bristol papers are our very smoothest. The smoother the paper, the more difficult it can be to produce an even shade.
Keep the 50/50 graphite and charcoal mix in a jar or empty spice container. (You can try this process just using charcoal dust, but the graphite in the mixture helps the tone stick to the paper well.) I tap some out on my white paper then use a bit of paper towel or tissue to rub it in.
Stratford makes a variety of Bristol papers, all of which work well for colored pencil. Keep in mind, Bristol paper typically comes in two surface types: smooth and vellum. Traditionally a vellum surface would be recommended for colored pencil work because it has a bit more texture and tooth than the smooth surface.
For rough practice sketches, pretty much any paper will do. Office printer paper is cheap and smooth and doesn't “bleed” if you like to sketch in pen. Bulk newsprint pads are functional, if not robust, and useful for large preparatory sketches. Cannon Biggie Sketch or Stratford 200 series are good, economical choices.
Bristol Board. Description: Bristol board provides a stiff surface (heavier than drawing paper). ... Mixed Media Paper. ... Watercolor Paper. ... Illustration Board. ... Drawing Sketchbook.
In general, the biggest difference between sketch and drawing paper is that Sketch paper is intended for practicing, experimenting, and quick studies, while drawing paper is intended for finished artwork. Sketch paper is often lighter weight, while drawing paper is conversely a bit heavier.
50-60 lb (approx 75-90 GSM): sketching or practice paper thick enough to work on with pencils, charcoal, or pastels, but usually too thin for ink or most markers, which may bleed through. 70-80 lb (approx 100-130 GSM): drawing paper suitable for finished artwork in most media.
For instance, a finer-scale texture will often work best for smaller work. This type of paper is suitable for sketching with pastel, charcoal, and soft pencil. Brands include Cannon Ingres, Hahnemühle Ingres, HahnemÃ1⁄4hle Sugar Pastel Paper, and Stratford 500 Series Charcoal Paper.
