Simply select the Insert tab and choose Equation under the Symbols section. If you still do not see the Equation option, you may have to go to File > Options > Customize Ribbon. Select All Commands in the Choose commands from menu, then add Symbols to the tabs listed on the right side of the screen.
To insert an equation in a Word 2007 document, click on the “Insert” menu/tab to see the “Insert” ribbon. In the “Symbols” section, choose “Equation”. You can also press “Alt+=” on your keyboard. You will now see Equation Tools | Design Ribbon.
When the Equation Icon is Grayed Out If the icon is grayed out, chances are, you have an older type of word document open. Save the document by clicking on File > Save As. DOCX and must use the equation editor, then you have an option to use the older version of the editor by doing the following. Go to Insert tab.
To type an equation from scratch, press Alt += on your keyboard. Choose Insert > Equation and select Insert New Equation from the bottom of the built-in equation gallery. This inserts an equation placeholder where you can type your equation.

To insert a preset equation in Word, place your cursor at insertion point in your document where you want the equation to appear. Then click the Insert tab in the Ribbon. Then click the Equation button in the Symbols button group on the right end of the tab.
Launch Word 2010 document, in which you want to insert any mathematical equation. Now navigate to Insert tab, and Click Equation drop-down button to view built-in list, containing different equations. Upon click desired equation from list, it will be automatically added into the document.
