What is the REAL ID license?
A real ID is a form of identification that meets increased security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards. Travelers will be required to provide either a real ID or another TSA-approved form of identification in order to fly after October 1, 2020.
How do I know if my driver's license is a real ID?
REAL ID-compliant licenses are marked by a star on the top of the card. Check here for an example of what your ID should look like by state. If you're still not sure, check your state driver's licensing agency website on how to obtain a REAL ID compliant card.
Can I get a real ID before my license expires?
A: For people whose driver license or identification card expires between now and the federal deadline of Oct. 1, 2020, the DMV recommends that they wait to apply for their REAL ID at the time of their renewal or within 120 days of the expiration date.
Does everyone need a real ID by 2020?
Come fall 2020, every U.S. air traveler will be required to present a Real ID-compliant license, or another acceptable form of identification such as a U.S. passport, to board a domestic flight.
