As in Excel, click the “File” tab in the ribbon menu; click “Info” and then click “Protect Document” to restrict who can edit your Word document. The options are similar to Excel, and there is also a “Restrict Editing” feature that lets you specify specific types of editing that are and are not allowed.
With that said, a password protected, encrypted Excel sheet does not have any protection to stop a brute force attack. If someone intercepts that Excel sheet, given enough time, they will be able to crack it and access the data inside it.
Hacking software is now readily available to find a 16-bit key and decrypt the password-protected document instantly. In Excel and Word 97 and 2000 the key length was increased to 40 bits. This protection algorithm is also currently considered to be weak and presents no difficulties to hacking software.
First, open the Office document you would like to protect. Click the File menu, select the Info tab, then select the Protect Document button. Click Encrypt with Password. Enter your password then click OK.
Vince, current versions of Word use 128-bit AES encryption, which should be secure enough for most people. A big thing to consider is that the encryption will only be as solid as your password, if you choose a password that will be easily guessed, it's as good as not having a password.
Microsoft Office password protection is a security feature to protect Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) documents with a user-provided password. As of Office 2007, this uses modern encryption; earlier versions used weaker systems and are not considered secure.
Files are essentially encrypted with your Windows user account password, so you'll lose them if you forget your Windows password. Bear in mind that these files are only encrypted when stored on your hard drive, so you can't email them securely without encrypting them differently.
