When a footnote must be placed at the end of a clause,1 add the number after the comma. When a footnote must be placed at the end of a sentence, add the number after the period. Numbers denoting footnotes should always appear after punctuation, except one piece of punctuation3the dash.
Footnotes can include anything from a citation to parenthetical information, outside sources, copyright permissions, background information, and anything in between, though certain style guides restrict when footnotes can be used.
Footnotes are notes placed at the bottom of a page. They cite references or comment on a designated part of the text above it. For example, say you want to add an interesting comment to a sentence you have written, but the comment is not directly related to the argument of your paragraph.
In Chicago style, footnotes or end notes are used to reference pieces of work in the text. To cite from a source a superscript number is placed after a quote or a paraphrase. Citation numbers should appear in sequential order. Each number than corresponds to a citation, a footnote or to an end note.
Include the pages on which the cited information is found so that readers easily find the source. Match with a superscript number (example: 1) at the end of the sentence referencing the source. Begin with 1 and continue numerically throughout the paper. Do not start the order over on each page.
