All car titles must be signed by the owners listed on the title in order to be registered with the state. If the co-owners names are joined with and then both parties must be present to sell the car. Titles using or between the co-owners' names either party can sell the car without the other party present.
A vehicle title can be notarized by the owner, without having to identify a buyer. Both the buyer and seller sign the title or confirm in person at the notary that they did sign the title. Only the signature of the seller must be notarized.
You are title jumping if you sell a vehicle without transferring the title into your name. Most states require you to transfer the title into your name within a specific time period. Sellers who do not transfer the title into their name before selling a vehicle technically are not the legal owner of the vehicle.
In many states, a seller is required to sign the back of the existing title along with the date, sale price, and exact odometer reading before handing it over to the buyer. The buyer would then take the title and register it. Have both parties sign it, then send the bill of sale to the DMV.
The seller should sign the title on the line that says Seller's signature. Again, if two people are selling the vehicle, both of their signatures need to fit on this line. Immediately next to this line is a place where the buyer(s) can sign their name(s).
Your state probably also requires that you sign the back of the title along with the seller. You should sign only after you have verified the information on the title and checked for liens. Ideally, you should go with the seller to the DMV office and fill out the transfer form together there.
When the title asks for the seller's name you would either print or sign your name exactly as it appears on the title where you are listed as the owner. Most states require that all owners listed on the title must print and sign their name when transferring ownership.
